Anglim Winery » Profile
Located downtown in Paso Robles' 125-year-old train depot, Anglim's focus is on Rhone varietals and blends, plus limited-production family favorites including Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Steve Anglim's winemaking career began innocently enough. Years ago, he and his wife Steffanie started out as home winemakers, "making one ton lots in our garage and taking classes at U.C. Davis," Anglim remembers. Eventually, the hobby turned into much more than that and the Anglims began sourcing high quality fruit for what would eventually become their family winery. That search led them to Central Coast winegrowers such as Harry Fralich, all of whom told the Anglims that this was the place to be. Anglim backed that up with his own research, and discovered that "there was a core quality that was forming here and just getting better and better."
As a result, Anglim Winery was established in 2002 with the goal of producing elegant wines from the finest vineyards in California's Central Coast. Anglim seeks out vineyards in Paso Robles and in Santa Barbara County with unique microclimates that produce fruit of distinction. Because of the label's small annual production, Anglim does the actual winemaking itself in a shared-use facility in Paso Robles, a situation that suits him just fine. "I want to work with growers," said Anglim. "and work with passionate people who know their vineyards." To that end, Anglim strives to combine the best of winemaking history with the best of new world techniques. He uses 100 percent French oak, and manages his wine making approach and new oak percentages to "avoid overextracted, tannic monsters. I want the wines to have a balanced style with enough character to be cellared but enough elegance to be enjoyed now."
In 2005, the Anglims opened their tasting room in downtown Paso Robles in the city's original train depot, dating back to 1887. The Anglim's chose the site for their tasting room because of its warmth and charm, natural light, and proximity to the train itself. "The space has a great feel to it - relaxing and interesting at the same time. Besides, our youngest daughter loves the choo-choo," said Anglim. "You can't beat that."
