The Bianchi family first established Bianchi Vineyards in 1974 in Kerman, California. "It was just a shell at the time with some old equipment," remembers Glenn Bianchi, President. "The first thing we did was bring in all new modern presses and equipment." Bianchi's father, Joseph, utilized his chemistry background to begin making the wines, and Glenn served as sales manager.
Within a few years, Bianchi Vineyards owned about 600 acres of wine grapes in California's Central Valley, and was producing 11 different varieties of wines. The label was also packaging those wines in new and novel ways. "We were very innovative in those days. We were also the first and only vineyard in the United States to grow Lambrusco grapes," said Bianchi.
The move to Paso Robles represents a major shift in position for the Bianchi label. With the new Paso Robles venture, Bianchi noted that the company plans to sell the Kerman facility and concentrate on producing high quality wines. "I heard about the Paso area and wanted to get into a more boutique attitude with the winery. After visiting the Paso Robles area, I realized that was the place I wanted to be." The winery will initially produce some 25,000-35,000 cases a year.
Bianchi's new state-of-the-art winery was completed in May 2004. The winery hosts special events including weddings and winemaker dinners.
The Bianchi Winery is located at the estate vineyards on Branch Road, just off Highway 46 East in Paso Robles, on a beautiful site with great views of the rolling hills and spectacular sunsets. The Bianchi family purchased the 40-acre vineyard in 2000. The vineyard consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Syrah.
The winery will focus on using fruit from the estate vineyards, but Bianchi noted that "we will also buy premium lots from the area- primarily from Paso Robles and the Central Coast." Currently, the Bianchi label features Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. The wines are distributed in 40 states throughout the country.
Bianchi Vineyards is a division of Modern Development Company (MDC), a family company that got its start some fifty years ago, under the leadership of Glenn?s father. Originally, in 1947, the company owned and operated drive-in movie theaters, and in 1955 branched out into swap meets. Today, MDC operates one of the largest swap meets in the U.S. Other interests include real estate holdings, office buildings, and movie theaters. In addition to his post as Managing General Partner of MDC, Glenn Bianchi also serves as chairman of the Kathleen Bianchi Foundation.
