Ron and Marilyn Denner came to California from Denver in search of the perfect land to grow premium wine grapes. After a two-year search that included six trips to Napa and five trips to Paso Robles, they found property on Willow Creek Road in Paso Robles. In 1998, they purchased the 126 acres that is now Denner Vineyards, and in 2000, purchased 30 contiguous acres for the winery site.
The 156-acre parcel had been in the Edgar Wiebe family for over 100 years and was used to dry-farm barley. The Denners planted their first grape vines on the property in August 1999. The vineyard was planted with twenty-five different small blocks. The layout and design were based upon the specific terroir and microclimates of each hillside exposure. The vineyard now includes 17 grape varieties, several of which are French clones very new to the United States. Varieties include Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Viognier, Roussanne, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino,Carmenere,Tannat,Counoise and Cinsault. The rocky calcareous soils, hot days, cooling ocean breezes of the Templeton Gap, and excellent exposures via careful row orientation provide ideal terroir and growing conditions for the carefully selected Rhone and Boudeaux varietals. The Denners are dedicated to sustainable farming practices and are planning to be fully organic in the near future.
In December 2003, the Denners broke ground on their 28,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art winery. Contoured into the hillsides of Westside Paso Robles, the new winery complements the natural beauty of their surrounding vineyards. Denner Winery utilizes the gravity-flow system, which means winemaker Anthony Yount can avoid the use of pumps at all stages of the winemaking process. Anthony is committed to using as many noninterventionist techniques as possible. This allows him to preserve the delicate aromas and complex flavors that are coaxed from the grapes during the winemaking process. The use of small fermentation tanks, hand punch downs, and French oak barrels further contribute to Denner's hand-made artisanal wines.
The Denners have exercised painstaking attention to quality at every level -- vineyard layout and management, production levels, winemaking, architecture, landscaping and facility designs. Please come by to taste our wines and tour our truly exceptional winery.
