Tackitt Family Vineyards » Profile
A small family venture dedicated to high quality wines for all to enjoy. Paso Robles has been home to the Tackitt Family for many years. My grandfather, Mark Tackitt, was with the Paso Robles Police Department for over 28 years. My other grandfather, John Thomas, (my mother's side) enlisted in the Army out of Creston and attended boot camp at Camp Roberts just before WWII. He retired from the Army in 1969 as a Chief Warrant Officer and settled to the Paso Robles area.
Sometime in the 1970s, my Grandfather Thomas planted about 29 Gewurztraminer vines that he had brought from Germany. Thanks to my mother, Charlotte Tackitt and grandmother, Beth Thomas, the vines are still alive and well. With my retirement from a 28-year career in the U.S. Navy coming into view, my wife, Cindy and I saw Paso Robles as a wonderful environment to start a second career in the wine industry. In 1998, Cindy and I, partnering with my dad, Boyd Tackitt, decided to take what my grandfather had started to the next level.
1998 was our first crush as a home winemaker and consisted of using the most basic equipment: an old wooden press borrowed from our friend, Dr. Mike Curran and a 55 gallon plastic drum. With the invaluable help of family and friends, (but having no idea what we were doing), we started picking the grapes, destemming the clusters by hand and crushing the grapes as we went. It was exhausting work that forced us to leave the large majority of the grapes hanging on the vines. In 2001, with more vines, the addition of crucial equipment and a lot of mentoring from Dr. Tom Morgan, (owner and winemaker of Casa de Caballos winery), we were able to pick over 1,000 pounds of grapes that yielded 81 gallons of juice and some pretty fine wine! 2008 brought retirement from the Navy and our bond as one of Paso's newest wineries.
Through it all, we have always known that creating wonderful wines is our first priority. Every season we learn more. Every challenge adds to our experience and increasing knowledge of the art of winemaking and we are well on our way toward producing some exceptional wines. As Tackitt Family Vineyards grows, we hope to share with you our love of wine.
