In 1996, the Orange County Wine Competition awarded them their first Gold Medal! Since then they have been given many awards including 90-point ratings from James Suckling/Wine Spectator, Steven Tanzer/International Wine Reviews and the Wine Enthusiast Magazine! New this month...the Zinfandel Chronicles gave the Private Reserve Zinfandel a 92-point rating and the Petite Sirah a 93-point rating!
In 1991, Bob and Jo-Ann began planting their vineyard with Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, later adding Zinfandel and Syrah. According to Robert they are not completely done. We want the right grape for the area. In 2011 they added Pinot Noir to the line up!
Robert came to the area from Malibu and Jo-Ann from the Pacific Palisades, California. They enjoy and live on their 40-acre property with their son Garrett (Garrett is now living up North attending Cal State University!) and puppy, Ralphie.
Because of the advantageous climate and soil of their 40 acre property, Robert believes his "Willow Creek" Westside Paso Robles vineyard is in the perfect location. As a result of warm summer days and cooler nights, their hillside & hilltop vineyards receive the coastal sea breeze as it filters through the canyons which benefits both the red and white varietal grapes. The rocky limestone soil produces lower yields, and very concentrated flavors.
Topping off these ideal growing conditions, Robert does much of the work himself, "My focus is on quality," Robert says. "Making and producing wines from your own vineyard...that's what it's all about!"
The winery currently produces around 2,500 cases annually and Robert and Jo-Ann prefer to remain small so they can retain closeness with their Wine Club Members & visitors.
The trip to Dunning Vineyards is worth it just for the scenery alone. Located just a few turns off Hwy 46 West or Vineyard Drive & an adventure at the End of the Road!
