PASO ROBLES 2013 VINTAGE BEGINS WITH A BLANC
Harvest of White Varietals Begins Two Weeks Early for Paso Robles Wine Country

Paso Robles, CA (August 15, 2013) Harvest of the 2013 vintage has begun in Paso Robles with Sauvignon Blanc. A week to 10 days early, Sauvignon Blanc is known as an early ripening wine grape variety with approximately 691 total bearing acres in the Paso Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA).

“We brought in about 16 tons of Sauvignon Blanc this week,” said Neil Roberts, owner of Roberts Vineyard Services. “Sauvignon Blanc typically has small, compact clusters, small berries and vibrant gooseberry aromatics, and this year is no exception. I am looking forward to what this fruit has in store once in bottle.”

It is no surprise that Sauvignon Blanc is the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance’s featured wine in August for their Varietal of the Month series. Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp white wine with moderate acidity that is perfect for the warm days of August. Other white varieties planned for harvest in the coming week include Albariño, Chardonnay and Viognier.

The slightly earlier start to harvest can be attributed to the early growing season warmth in June/July when daytime temperatures averaged 92 degrees Fahrenheit, which included eight straight days of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Moderate to lower than average temperatures toward the end of July and into August has given winegrowers a chance to assess the incoming crop and are reporting an average size yield ahead. Harvest usually concludes in mid to late November, but because this is farming, there’s no telling what Mother Nature may bring in the coming months that could affect the time frame of harvest.

Winemakers and growers take a break the third weekend in October for Harvest Wine Weekend, a three-day celebration of the new vintage in Paso Robles. This event begins Friday, October 18 and concludes Sunday, October 20. More than 130 wineries welcome visitors to immerse themselves in the harvest experience with varied events from special vintage tastings, vineyard tours, winemaker dinners and more.
