Paso Robles, CA - Castoro Cellars Winemaker, Tom Myers, was voted "2002 Winemaker of the Year" by the California Mid-State Fair on July 17, 2002. The nominees were selected by members of the Mid-State Fair Grape Posse, a committee comprised of industry leaders from throughout San Luis Obispo County. Almost 200 ballots were received for the final vote from members of the county’s three viticulture associations: the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers’ Association (PRVGA), San Luis Obispo Vintners and Growers’ Association (SLOVGA), and the Central Coast Wine Growers’ Association (CCWGA).

Since 1998, the California Mid-State Fair has honored the San Luis Obispo County wine industry with a "Winemaker of the Year", "Winegrower of the Year", and new to this year, "Wine Industry Person of the Year Award." These awards recognize individuals who are leaders of excellence in their craft and are involved in community affairs. In addition to the nomination of Tom Myers for "Winemaker of the Year", Castoro Cellars founder, Niels Udsen, was nominated for "Wine Industry Person of the Year."

"Tom Myers is highly respected in this region, not only for his current work with Castoro Cellars, but also for his past involvement with the wine industry in this region. He is a skilled winemaker, has mentored many others in the industry, and has been an active part of organizations that contribute to the success of winegrowing in this region," said Sheila Griffie, Executive Director of the PRVGA.

Myers serves as a member of the PRVGA, as well as a past board member and officer. He is a member and past president of the CCWGA and is currently an officer of Paso Watch, a local organization promoting sustainable growth.

Accepting the award, Myers stated, "More than anything, I am honored that this is an award from my peers. I am also pleased to bring recognition to Castoro Cellars and to the Paso Robles AVA."

Myers has created wines from the Paso Robles AVA throughout his entire winemaking career. After receiving his Masters Degree in Enology and Viticulture from UC Davis, he began his career at Estrella Winery as Assistant Winemaker in 1978 and was promoted to Winemaker in 1982. Myers accepted the position of Winemaker at Castoro Cellars soon after it was founded and has served in this position for the past twelve years. One of the original wineries of the Paso Robles AVA, Castoro Cellars and Tom Myers, are now well known to the Central Coast region for producing world-class wines.

Castoro Cellars was founded by the husband and wife team of Niels and Bimmer Udsen in the early 1980s with a warm and welcoming style. The winery was named after the Italian translation of Niels’ long-time nickname, "Beaver", prompting the motto "Dam Fine Wines." From the wine cellar to the tasting room, all who contribute to Castoro wines hold strongly to the belief that high quality wines should be accessible to all consumers. Located within the Paso Robles AVA, Castoro Cellars welcomes all wine palates. The Tasting Room is located at 1315 North Bethel Road in Templeton, CA and can be reached via phone at (888) DAM-FINE, also (888) 326-3463, or via web at:
