THE WINE CORNER
Spotlight on Paso Robles
*Excerpted from The Piedmost Press/The Wine Corner
At a recent trade tasting for the Paso Robles area in San Francisco recently I encountered fewer and fewer of the "dark side" wines; it seemed the vintners were finding effective ways to manage the hot climate. To me the Paso Region is most successful with Zinfandel, Syrah, Grenache, Mouvedre and Petite Sirah aslong with the white Rhone grapes of Marsanne and Rousanne.
The following wines were the best of show at this large tasting and to me represent some of the rising stars of Paso Robles.
2007 Roxo Port Cellars-Magia Preta $75.00
The abundant heat in Paso Robles gives it a Portugal like location for making port style wines. The wine in the vintage Port style (the heaviest and the best) is made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. While lacking just slightly in complexity compared to a top quality Portuguese Port, this wine offers up lots of drinking pleasure with its vibrant juicy mouthfeel and long sumptuous finish. This would be heaven with Stilton or Roquefort cheese and almonds.
