THE ARMCHAIR OENOPHILE
Central Coast Wines-2007 Roxo Port Cellars Paso Melange

When the occasion is small, port makes a particularly nice gift for the host and/or chef of the house. After the main course has been enjoyed, produce a half-bottle of Roxo Paso Mélange (ideally with a well-timed “Tah-dah!”) for a surprise toast and show of gratitude for the wonderful evening so far. Made predominately with Cabernet Franc, this blend also has Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the last of which brings a deep sweet sizzle to this luscious vintage port. It’s a Bordeaux-blend made with traditional Portuguese methods and, finishing with 19-percent alcohol, It’s sublime sipping on
its own. It also pairs with many rich desserts and deeply flavored cheeses (which hopefully, the host and/or chef of the house has produced, ideally, with a well-timed “Voilà!”). By the way — Abracadabra!—look for Roxo’s tasting bar inside the Meritage Tasting Lounge (meritagelounge.com), a wine-lover’s gathering spot in downtown Paso Robles!
