A Fruity and Floral Bouquet Makes the ’08 Gr8Ass Marsanne a Luscious, Light-Hearted Gift for Lover

Kiss chocolate and flowers goodbye this Valentine’s Day. With a refreshingly tongue-in-cheek love note-label and a sweet, seductive flavor profile, the Gr8Ass ’08 Marsanne (Paso Robles, CA) says it all.

Like its name, the Gr8Ass Marsanne does not beat around the bush; winemaker Signe Zoller calls it bold, yet sophisticated, provocative and well-balanced, without unnecessary fluff or a smidge of disappointment—perhaps the perfect recipe for a romantic evening. Just unscrew the cap to tempt your lover with the irresistibly crisp, round, fruit-forward flavors of juicy pear and sun-kissed peach, and the intoxicating aromatics of night-blooming jasmine. The soft, supple structure of this floral vintage maintains a firm, full-mouth texture for a long, lingering, completely satisfying finish.

Made with 100% Marsanne fruit from the highly-regarded Derby Vineyard—set amid the cool, coastal climate of Paso Robles’ far west side—the Gr8Ass Marsanne was cold-fermented in stainless steel to bring out the fruity aromatics and then moved to neutral barrels for 5 months. Zoller says she chose to bottle the 59 cases of Marsanne early to capture and preserve the subtle nuances, and opted for a screw cap to further protect the crisp citric notes from fading. The result of her painstaking winemaking is a pure, bottled, liquid testament to Zoller’s impressive résumé of lifelong winemaking achievement.

Highly reputed in the industry as both a winemaker and a wine judge, Zoller was previously a winemaker at renowned Kendall-Jackson Winery and served a ten-year tenure with founding winemaker Chuck Ortman at Meridian Vineyards, one of the most successful commercial wineries in Paso Robles, before launching her own Gr8Ass label and her custom winemaking business, Zoller Wine Styling. She has now produced nearly 30 acclaimed wine labels for her custom winemaking clients, as well as a few for herself (the 2008 Paso Robles, CA Gr8Ass Marsanne stole Bronze for the Women’s Winemaker Challenge in the recent 2009 National Women’s Wine Competition, among other accolades).

“Signe’s winemaking skills show versatility and an unmatched palate—she is a an extraordinary talent, the likes of which are rarely seen,” says Ortman, pointing to her “smooth and balanced” wines that have won numerous awards including Best of Show at the Long Beach and Monterey wine competitions and two at the California State Fair. Zoller has a Masters degree in Food Science and Enology from the University of California at Davis; is the past president of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture and the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers Association; and has been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance and the Central Coast Winegrowers Association.
