FOCUS ON THE CENTRAL COAST
By Stephen Tanzer

Jada Vineyard
2007 Hell's Kitchen Paso Robles($48; 54% syrah, 25% tannat and 21% mourvedre) Inky ruby. Exotic scents of red and dark berries, black olive, minerals and violet; smells like a powerful northern Rhone wine. Creamy black raspberry and cherry-cola flavors stain the palate and are framed by velvety tannins. The violet note returns on the finish, which is strikingly sweet and persistent.91

2006 Passing By Paso Robles($38; 95% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot) Saturated ruby. Smoky, pungent aromas of dried red berries and cherry, with notes of anise and rose adding complexity. Dusty tannins add support to the deep red- and blackcurrant flavors, which are given spine by zesty minerality. Manages to be ripe as well as nervy, and finishes with good clarity and spicy persistence.90

2006 Jack Of Hearts Paso Robles($42; 45% cabernet sauvignon, 40% petit verdot and 15% merlot) Deep ruby-red. Youthfully primary dark berry and cherry skin on the nose, with complicating notes of cracked pepper and minerals. Tightly wound on entry but loosens up and gains sweetness with air to offer lush black raspberry and boysenberry flavors. Finishes with impressive clarity and a strong kick of Asian spices. This is drinking very well right now.91
