(PASO ROBLES, Calif.) – Summerwood Winery recently won top honors at the first annual Critics Challenge International Wine Competition held in San Diego, California. All three of the wines the winery entered won honors.
The Summerwood Sentio III 2001, a Central Coast Bordeaux blend created by Winemaker Scott Hawley, was selected out of 1,299 wines as the singular "Wine of the Year" winning the first ever "Critics Challenge Grand Award." The winery’s Rhone blend Diosa 2001 and Diosa 2002, both from the Paso Robles appellation, won a Critics Gold and a Critics Award respectively.
The Critics Challenge International Wine Competition is unique because the complete panel of judges consists of an experienced and published group of respected and internationally-known wine critics and writers. According to Robert Whitley who founded and directed the competition, "Before we took the final vote I remember thinking this wine (the Sentio III) was the complete package. It had everything: long flavors, great depth, power. And all of the parts were working together. Everything was in sync. Like all of our judges, I taste thousands of wines every year. Yet it’s not every day I come across a red this impressive." Whitley is a syndicated wine columnist for Copley News Service and hosts the weekly two-hour radio program "Whitley on Wine" on the World Talk Radio Network.
"Throughout the competition many of the judges remarked to me that the quality of the wines entered was very high across the board. So to emerge as the top wine from such a stellar field of entrants is indeed an accomplishment to be proud of," Whitley added.
